Christmas Activities for Families: Delaware 2015

Christmas is the season of happiness, joy, and love. It is a time for spending time with our loved ones. As it was said in the song “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”…right?? Unfortunately, it seems like much of the joy of the season is lost in all of the hustle and bustle of trying to get everything ready. Slow down! Don’t let the stress of the holidays make family time a thing of the past! Here’s a list of things to do in the Delaware area that the whole family can enjoy together.


Museums/Gardens/Orchardspoinsettias

“Holidays at Hagley”– Hagley Museum. Wilmington, DE (302-658-2400) Nov. 27th – Jan. 3rd (Closed
Dec. 25th). Lace decorations add to the ambiance of Hagley’s annual holiday exhibition this year with “A Feminine Touch.” Visit their website for details and schedule of events including Holiday Brunch, Science Saturday: Color and Light, and WOW (Wonders of Winter) camp.

“A Longwood Christmas”– Longwood Gardens.  Kennett Square, PA (610-388-1000) Open until Jan. 10th. Highlights include beautiful decorations, music, and a brand new fire pit!

“Christmasland” – Linvilla Orchards-  Media, PA. (610-876-7116) See the Christmasland display and visit with the animals in their winter coats. The Christmas Shop & Garden Center features wreaths, freshly cut trees, greens & holly, decorations, fruit and gift baskets, Christmas gifts, hot mulled cider & children’s crafts. Cut your own Christmas trees, and go on “Caroling Hayrides”. Visit the website for dates and times.

“Christmas at Milburn’s Orchard”–  Elkton, MD. (410-398-1349). Dec. 12 & 13, 19 & 20, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Free Photo with Santa! One free print included, feel free to bring your camera!

“A Dickens Experience”– New Castle Historical Society. New Castle, DE. (302-322-2794) Saturday, Dec. 12th. Experience an interactive version of “A Christmas Carol” featuring street theater, bell ringing, carolers, and more.

Nutcracker– Delaware Dance Company, U of D campus, Newark, DE. (302-738-2023) Showings on Dec. 11-13th. Visit thewebsite for tickets.

Holiday Sing-along– The Music School of Delaware. Dec. 6th @ 3 pm. A musical treat for the whole family.

Old-Fashioned Community Sing Along– Kent County Public Library.  Dover, DE. (302-698-6440) Sunday, Dec. 13th @ 1:30 pm. Enjoy an “Old-fashioned carol sing-along” led by Dr. Yvonne Hohnson, Ph. D. Delaware State University Professor of Music.

Holiday Stories with Santa– The Wilmington Library. (302-571-7412). Wednesday Dec. 16th @ 10 am. Ages Pre-School to K. Hear stories and sing songs with Santa. Call for reservations. 

Train Rides:

Wilmington & Western Railroad. Wilmington, DE. (302-998-1930)

“Santa Claus Express”– Saturdays & Sundays until Christmas, 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. Reservations Recommended. Take a train ride with Santa! Don’t forget your camera!

“Holiday Lights Express”– Daily from Dec. 11th- Dec. 30th starting at 5:00 pm. Reservations Recommended. Take a 45 minute evening ride aboard a railcar covered in holiday lights and enjoy the many decorated houses along the track.

“Zoo Noel”– Philadelphia Zoo. Philadelphia, PA. (215-243-1100) Saturdays & Sundays 11 am-3 pm until Christmas. Have fun with some crafts and activities and visit with Santa. Bring a holiday card for your favorite animal, and Santa’s helpers will hand-deliver your greeting that day. Highlights include a Santa scavenger hunt, crafts and activities, pictures with Santa, and a holiday gift shop and hot chocolate bar.

Christmas Celebration at Adventure Aquarium– Camden, NJ. (856-365-3300) Open Dec. 4th-Dec. 31st. Enjoy the live shows, decorations, and lights. Featuring Scuba Santa, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster.

The Polar Express 4D Experience– National Aquarium. Baltimore, MD. (410 576-3800) The Polar Express featured in digital 3D and brought to life with 4D multi-sensory effects.

 

Theme Parks

Theme Parks aren’t just for summer time! Enjoy your favorite rides among the holiday lights, decorations, and music.

“A Very Furry Christmas”-Sesame Place. Langhorne, PA. (1-866-464-3566) Open select days until Dec. 31st. Enjoy a few special Christmas shows and visit with Santa in his “furry workshop”. Visit the website for details about Christmas shows and attractions.

“Christmas Candylane”– Hershey Park. Hershey, PA. (1-800-HERSHEY). This year BIGGER, BETTER, & BRIGHTER. Highlights include 4 awesome coasters, visits with Santa and his reindeer, ice skating at Rudolph’s Pond, holiday-themed entertainment and shopping! Visit the website for details!
