group of happy preschool kidsWhy is preschool important? What can my child learn in preschool that I can’t teach them at home? Are there any long-term benefits to preschool? These are questions you may ask yourself when trying to decide on whether to invest in early education. While only you can decide what’s best for your family, we can help provide some information that may help you make this decision.

A high quality preschool offers many benefits including developmental growth, and skills such as math, literacy, and problem-solving. While some of the short term benefits start to fade as the children get older and the other children begin to catch up, studies have shown some important long term benefits as well.

Short term:

Social and emotional development—Social skills are a critical part of early development. Preschool allows children to build relationships with other children and teachers. They will learn to share and empathize with others, learning that they don’t always need to be the center of attention. They will also learn discipline, respect, and develop listening skills. These skills will be very important when it’s time to start kindergarten.

Math, literacy, and motor skills—Children learn best through activities. A high quality preschool will help them to learn while they play promoting vocabulary development and communication skills. Studies have shown children who attend high quality preschools start kindergarten up to 7 months ahead in literacy and math.[1]

Long Term:

Studies have shown that children who attended high quality preschools have had a higher rate of high school completion, higher achievement test scores, and lower rates of grade retention or being placed in special education programs.[2] One such study, The Highscope Perry Preschool Study, showed that adults who had participated in the preschool program had higher earnings, were more likely to hold a job, and had committed fewer crimes.

Based on these studies, we believe early education gives children an important head start for a very successful future!
